Just installed VMWare Server 1.0.4 on my Ubuntu 7.10 workstation. Thanks to these instructions. Now I can run Windows XP for the few things I actually need it for.
Best Dinner/Lunch – Gourmet on Broadway
Gourmet on Broadway offers food with a Mediterranean influence. The quality and taste of the food is always been great. The dinner specials and deserts get the top raves from me. The only complaint I would have is to have more dinner hours. I believe the dinner hours only happen during the summer on Fridays. Lunch seems to be the biggest time frame for business downtown but for residents who rarely antique shop and need something different than fast food for dinner, there are not many options.
Best Breakfast – Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club combines a great menu selection, food, and service. Best menu item is the “Bagel Benedict Arnold”. Second choice when I’m in a “healthier” mood is the “Oatmeal Breakfast”. Definitely gets a little crowded during the weekends around lunch or after church but well worth the wait
Best Fast Food – Skyline Chili
I guess you have to a fan of Cincinnati style chili to eat here but it’s definitely a favorite of mine. I’m glad there is one located in Lebanon. I have had both good and bad service here but the food is always good.
Best Chinese Food – New China
There are a few options for Chinese food in Lebanon and New China has become the favorite.
First of all, I want to say that I have been totally happy with Ubuntu 7.10. The upgrade process was easy and completed without any issues. It’s definitely the best Ubuntu release I have used. But I have run into some problems which I should investigate further.
- The first issue is the video card drivers. I wanted to play with the new Compiz features so I installed the “restricted” video card drivers for my nVidia GeForce FX 5500 video card. This seemed to work fine initially. I was able to use “wobbly windows” and draw with the “fire” feature. I then did a reboot and my screen resolution was knocked down to 1064×768 instead of the original 1440×900. I uninstalled the “restricted” video drivers and I was able to configure the resolution back to 1440×900. I guess I could manually try different settings in my xorg.conf file but I really do not want to have to do that and I am OK without using the Compiz features for now.
- The spreadsheet chart editor in OpenOffice 2.3 seems buggy to me. It has crashed multiple times for me.
I just discovered Nickel Creek not too long ago. I was blown away by the originality of their music and how awesome they are as musicians. And they are great song writers on top of that! The NPR podcast “All Songs Considered” has a live concert from Nickel Creek which is incredible. It’s sad that the band is going on a indefinite hiatus but I will just have to enjoy the music they have released so far. Listening to the podcast makes me wish I could have caught a live show at some point.
I just upgraded my PC from Ubuntu “Feisty Fawn” to “Gutsy Gibbon”. The upgrade succeeded without any issues so far. Here is a screenshot of my desktop.
